The purpose of this lead is to have the dog work with you and adapt to your body movements. The dog learns to be attached to you and anticipate what you are doing and the direction it should move with you. I have used and trained with this style leash for over ten years and have found it to be the fastest way to teach a dog to stay with what I am doing and work with me. This is the leash I always use to take a dog out in public. It is so functional and versatile I would not be without it. One of the benefits of this leash is that it gives you free movement of both your hands. You can work attached to the dog and at the same time move independently from the dog. It is much easier to push a shopping cart, open doors, or pick up objects when you have both hands free. When you are using this lead you will direct the dog with your legs and body movements as much as touching the leash. The lead rests across your shoulder and wraps under your arm and stays close to you so you have quick access to the leash. It is adjustable with different rings that are set into the leash. This is so that the dog can be placed at different lengths away from the handler. And it gives the dog freedom to stop and lay down and rest when the lead is set on the closest snap ring.

The only leash I use for training I have three of these leashes, one each for the house, the truck and the boat. It is the only leash my ten-month old, 96 lb, Labrador, service-dog-in-training has known. He has been a very physically challenging pup, more so than my previous Labs. The Hands Free Leash has made effective control a possibility, even with such a big, enthusiastic pup. When used correctly, the leash provides leverage to the handler that other leashes don't offer. Combined with a sturdy harness, the leash/harness combination helped my pup learn how to demonstrate "good citizen" behavior in public places. He has learned to stay by my side, and to coordinate his movements with mine. Also, I am able to control him even when he is distracted. This leash really accelerated his "loose-leash" training. It is a great training tool, and has made training an experience my pup enjoys.

Hands free nylon web leash This is not my favorite leash because it seems too heavy with the four O rings that I do not need. I actually took two of them off. I like a hands-free leash that goes through a bigger O ring to keep the leash together more, especially at the bottom because I normally use the O ring closest to the collar. I hope that makes sense. First picture is this nylon web leash and the 2nd picture is a leather leash with O ring. I hope you can see the difference.

Mary K Deane on September 1st, 2016 I have 2 of these leashes, and found the D-Rings a bit too far spaced for my liking, as well. I added 4 round metal split keychain rings onto each leash, which "float" along the length. When the spring clip is attached to these floating rings it allows for much better/custom type cross body fit.

Hands free I would have given five stars but the leash is very thin and the patch was put on upside down.

Mary K. and Goldendoodle Service Dog, Jack, Idaho This leash is a definite MUST for SD teams!! It truly makes it easier when grocery shopping, etc., when you need the use of both hands, yet know that you still have complete control of your dog at all times!

Awesome leash but one small caveat I love this leash. It gives nice control. The only issue is if you train for IPO, you can't do a proper about turn to the left. Small thing, but something I didn't think about when I bought it. I will still use it for my daily walks and outings and to start the process of off leash heeling. A great tool!

Excellent Quality. I purchased this after other SD Handler's had suggested to me that a hands-free leash made life easier. I never knew how much I'd come to love this leash. Not only does it offer precise control over my SD when I need it to, but when I do not need it to it also offers complete freedom of motion for me. With this leash I can achieve my preferred heeling motion with ease, I personally, never change the length of my leash but rather have taken to changing the distance I am from my SD by means of looping my finger through one of the leash rings. When I hold onto the ring closest to my SD we heel in complete synchronization. When I need him to follow behind me or he is in a sit or a down stay I can move my hand further up the leash to a different ring or simply release the leash completely and forget it's even there. I got this leash when my SD was just an SDiT, I was having trouble keeping a heel position as my puppy was highly distractable and he has very little interest in treats. He is toy driven though and the first day I used this leash I discovered it had a very useful trick up it's sleeve, I took my Hol-ee Roller Ball and I attached it to my leash which made it stay directly at my side. My puppy grasped onto it as soon as I told him he was allowed to do so and he would not let go. He had a lovely game of tug and I walked around freely with him keeping beside me. I accomplished in thirty minutes with this leash what I had been struggling to accomplish in two months without it. He never had trouble heeling after that training session, and I only had to use the ball that first time. On a side note I have always used this leash with a Gentle Leader so I cannot say how it performs with a collar or harness. With the head halter I have found it is ideal for me.

Love it! All the previous reviews and description is correct about this leash. I love it! It's so convenient being hands free but still in control if needed. Plus the different rings for setting your dog at different lengths away from you. You will not be disappointed with this leash.

Worry Free I would be lost without my hands free leash. It makes having my Service Dog with me a breeze.. he just walks beside me at all times. I never have to worry about him getting away from my when I'm busy... It is worth it's weight in Gold!..

Look Ma' No Hands! My disability left me with the use of only one hand. I found life with my service dog very awkward and cumbersome until I was introduced to a hands-free leash. The leash I received as a gift left me stooping to give my 30 lb dog length to relieve himself because it was too short. I added an extension, but that was just another item to connect. I found this 7.5' leash with many wearing options and now life is so much easier. I use it in shoulder harness position. Before this leash, my dog was also pulling to the point that my neck was always sore. Now, I have him perfectly positioned for walking and jogging and he stays in perfect position allowing me to move at my will versus constantly correcting him. I can walk tall, sit erect and have full use of my hand. Thanx

Erica "The DogGirl" in San Diego, CA Let me begin by saying that I'm currently on my 3rd self-trained Service Dog. I found ActiveDogs over a decade ago and buy gear NOWHERE else!
After about 3wks of use, I'm LOVING this leash! Well made, obviously durable, and incredibly handy! I wish I'd gotten one ages ago. The only reason I didn't was because of financial constraints. I highly recommend buying one, however (even if your budget is tight) ESPECIALLY if you're training your own dog, or mentoring under another trainer. There's no substitute for effectively training your dog to cue into your upper body movement as well as your foot placement/where you're walking; this is by far the best tool with which to do this. THANKS, ACTIVEDOGS!

Incredible! This leash had an almost instant effect. It is very true what the description says, that it gives the dog options to lay down and what not, but you are very much in control. My aussie that is currently in-training, is used as a balance dog. He has a fitted leather harness that just keeps me upright (hardly any pressure put onto him), but he had no direction with your typical lead. This is perfect and keeps the silent communication between you and your dog very much present. This is truly THE Perfect leash for a service/assistance dog team.
